Browse for souvenirs, sip mint tea in a traditional teahouse, and be ready to haggle while keeping an eye on your belongings and then go soak up the atmosphere.

You can climb to the hilltop Citadel of Saladin for sweeping views over Cairo and the Nile, then explore the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the 19th-century "Alabaster Mosque" with soaring domes and broad courtyards. You should wear modest clothing for mosque areas, bring sun protection, and leave time to wander the citadel's ramparts and small museums.

You can wander Old Cairo to see soaring medieval mosques, ancient Coptic churches such as the Hanging Church, and the Coptic Museum along atmospheric, history-steeped streets. Take a guided walk to uncover hidden courtyards, learn how the city’s faiths layered over centuries, and see it for yourself.
